Expressway Spares named the 2022 Workplace Safety Champions
Expressway Spares are proud to have won an award at the recent SafeWork NSW 2022 Excellence Showcase under the category of “Outstanding Solution to a Work Health and Safety Risk – Large Business (non-government)”.
The Awards started in 2004 as a way of acknowledging NSW businesses that were encouraging high standards of work health and safety. They continue to recognise businesses that have demonstrated outstanding workplace health and safety management.
Gary Bowyer and Matt Hutchison with the SafeWork NSW 2022 Excellence Showcase award
The entire Expressway Spares team continually prove their dedication to workplace health and safety and this recent recognition of our success in this area is a great achievement.
The awards take into consideration not only the ability to uphold high WHS standards, but also the business's capability for innovation within the field. Expressway Spares recognised that standard “tick and flick” risk assessment checklists commonly found on worksites were no longer engaging their staff and were of no value.
The solution came as a collaborative effort, and in the form of a simple whiteboard.
Whiteboards were one of the tools identified by the team to improve the Expressway Spares Risk Assessment Process. Having a whiteboard permanently on display keeps the team informed and accountable. Each work group identified their work area critical risks and their controls which were provided on to a permanent sign in each work area. The critical risks signs are reviewed weekly and where a change is introduced, the team risk assess the change on the whiteboard and record this in a different colour marker (generally red).
The results and impacts across worksites and workplace culture have been significantly positive.
Since its’ introduction we have already experienced significant declines in injuries and other areas such as warranty claims; and our workers are more engaged and able to explain the risks associated with the work they are performing and how they are managing these risks. The added benefit has been an overall improvement in workplace culture, improved worker engagement and safety being seen as a value.
The G1 team happy with their achievement!
We thank all of our staff for their innovative ideas, and for committing to uphold a positive work environment and the highest safety standards, without whom we wouldn’t have achieved such a great win.
We look forward to continually improving our safe systems of work into the future. We are always on the lookout for great new staff. If you’re interested in working with us, check out our jobs page.
